How GST is calculated in India
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a consumption tax levied on most goods and services in India. The amount of tax depends on the applicable rate slab — commonly 5%, 12%, 18% or 28% — and on whether the supply is within a single state or across states.
CGST + SGST vs IGST
For an intra-state supply (the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state), the total GST is split equally between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). So on an 18% supply, you charge 9% CGST and 9% SGST. For an inter-state supply (different states, or imports), a single Integrated GST (IGST) is charged at the full rate instead of the CGST/SGST split.
Inclusive vs exclusive amounts
An exclusive amount is the base price before tax — use “Add GST” to compute the tax and the gross total. An inclusive amount already contains GST (for example, an MRP or a quoted final price) — use “Remove GST” to extract the base value and the tax portion using base = amount × 100 ÷ (100 + rate).
Frequently asked questions
How is GST calculated on an amount?+
To add GST (exclusive), multiply the base amount by the rate and add it: GST = amount × rate ÷ 100, and total = amount + GST. To remove GST from a GST-inclusive price, work backwards: base = amount × 100 ÷ (100 + rate), and GST = amount − base.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?+
For an intra-state supply (buyer and seller in the same state), GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) — each is half the total rate. For an inter-state supply (different states), a single IGST is charged at the full rate instead.
What are the common GST rates in India?+
The main GST slabs are 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Some goods and services are taxed at 0% (exempt/nil-rated) or special rates. This calculator includes the four main slabs plus a custom rate field for anything else.
